2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL Bests Honda Pilot Head-to-Head -- See How at Randall Noe Hyundai

When you think of a new mid-size SUV for the northeast Texas drive, there's a good chance you end up picturing those like Hyundai Santa Fe XL and Honda Pilot. Both models check plenty of boxes for drivers around Terrell looking for the capabilities, safety features, creature comforts, and technologies to make every trip a pleasure cruise. However, only one pulls ahead where it counts, and that's Santa Fe XL. So, how do both crossovers match up?

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL vs. 2019 Honda Pilot

  • Santa Fe XL features a 5,000-pound max tow rating from the get-go, putting you in light camper-, ATV-, dirt bike duo-, or even second-car-hauling territory for that drive out to Forney. Pilot, on the other hand, can only haul as much as 3,500 pounds in its base LX trim. You have to invest in AWD to reach 5,000.
  • Every new Santa Fe XL features downhill brake control and hill start assist control, standard. That means the ability to manage tough slopes when you need it. Pilot features only hill start assist.
  • Advanced driver aids like blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist come available in base trims and standard in Santa Fe XL Limited Ultimate. You'll have to rise to Pilot EX to get the former two -- they aren't available in its base trim.
  • When it comes to slipping into that premium spot at your Rockwall venue, Santa Fe XL makes it easier to get the tech you need to do so dependably, sooner. Rear parking sensors and a multi-view camera system come standard in the Limited Ultimate trim. You'll need to go all the way to the Touring trim to get the former in Pilot.
  • A huge host of driver-assistance features are optional in Santa Fe XL Limited Ultimate. They include smart cruise control, a lane departure warning system, automatic emergency brakes, pedestrian detection, high-beam assist, and, for better visibility around corners as you turn, dynamic bending light. No DBL option is offered anywhere in the Pilot lineup.
  • Hard-wearing, stain-resistant YES Essentials cloth seats come standard in the Santa Fe XL base, with leather seating surfaces optional. The former is great for a traveling family with a busy lifestyle, and the latter makes a luxurious standard for Limited Ultimate. Pilot, however, doesn't offer a high-durability seating option.
  • Heated front seats come available in entry-level Santa Fe XL trims, and you can upgrade to Limited Ultimate to get heated and ventilated second-row seats. You'll have to step up to Pilot EX, on the other hand, if you want heated front seats.
  • You can stay in control of your entertainment and connectivity easily with the 7-inch display audio infotainment system in the Santa Fe XL base. An 8-inch touchscreen with navigation is also available. The screen built into the Pilot base is much smaller, just 5 inches.
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard in every Santa Fe XL trim, simplifying integrating a mobile phone and accessing and using it from the in-dash display. You can only get Apple and Android phone compatibility, however, in the Pilot EX trim and later.
  • Take advantage of a third-row USB outlet option in the Santa Fe XL base to keep your rear passengers' electronics energized and ready to go. It's standard in Limited Ultimate. No USB connectivity is offered in the third Pilot row.
  • Hyundai assures its vehicles' quality with one of the most competitive warranties in the industry, and your Santa Fe XL is covered. You can look forward to 5 years or 60,000 miles of new vehicle limited and 10 years or 100,000 miles of powertrain coverage, not to mention 7 years of perforation protection and 5 years of 24/7 roadside assistance, both for unlimited miles. Pilot, on the other hand, is only warrantied for 3 years/36,000 miles, 5 years/60,000 miles, 5 years, and 3 years/36,000 miles respectively.
