The 2020 Hyundai Tucson makes a strong return to the compact sport utility vehicle market, offering an updated color scheme for the new model year and extending the leather-wrapped gear shift and steering wheel to more of the trims. The result is a solidly performing vehicle with plenty of style and comfort. There are six trim levels for the Tucson, the SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited and Ultimate.

Performance

The Tucson has two engine options, both gas-powered four-cylinder designs with direct injection, although the more powerful of the two is a 2.4-liter offering 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque.

The base engine is a 2.0-liter design with 150 pound-feet of torque and 161 horsepower. All trims share the same transmission, a six-speed automatic that offers both overdrive and an auto-manual option. Each trim level comes in a standard front-wheel drive design that has an all-wheel-drive alternative option.

Exterior

From its distinctive swirl hubcap pattern to its sleek sculpting, the exterior of the Tucson offers a smooth simplicity that belies its sophisticated engineering. Wrap around headlights provides greater visibility for Terrell drivers and surrounding vehicles even when they approach from the side.

The powerful grille in shining chrome makes a distinctive focal point for the front end, balanced between foglights and headlights while proudly displaying the Hyundai badge. The roof of the vehicle gently slopes towards the back, aiding in aerodynamic flow. The understated rear of the car features wraparound brake lights and subtly placed dual exhaust pipes.

Interior

The interior space offers a dual-tone option for added visual interest. All controls are within easy reach, many of them duplicated on the steering wheel for added convenience. Bucket-style heated and ventilated seats keep the front row occupants comfortable.

The rear seats can fold down in a 60/40 split configuration to expand cargo space from 31 cubic feet up to a generous 61 cubic feet. A large moonroof on some trims lets in plenty of extra light and extends viewing enjoyment. The rear bench seats hold three passengers and include a USB port, cupholders, and door bins.

Technology

Technology features in the Tucson center around providing a pleasant driving experience. Helpful features like light-sensing high beams or rain-sensing wipers allow the driver to focus on the road instead of adjusting the lights or wiper speed. The seven-inch touchscreen and surrounding cameras combine to provide an expansive view of the immediate area while reversing.

Information and entertainment are just a touch away using the integrated Apple CarPlay or Android Auto features to access playlists, apps, news, traffic, and navigation options. The higher trims also offer a wireless charging pad to keep electronics ready to play at all times.

Using Hyundai's Blue Link system, drivers can access information about their vehicle remotely and also access certain onboard features like the door locks, climate control, and engine ignition.

Safety

Safety and technology merge in the Tucson's array of sensors and cameras, all strategically placed to take in the surrounding traffic and to search for obstacles. The Tucson will take the fatigue out of constantly adjusting speed to match traffic while driving. When placed in cruise control mode, it automatically maintains a safe distance between cars, fully accelerating or braking in response to changes as they happen.

The Tucson is also adept at recognizing pedestrians in forward or reverse gear, sounding an alarm, and preemptively stopping the vehicle from avoiding a collision. Falling asleep at the wheel is also a thing of the past thanks to the close monitoring of the vehicle's position in a lane. If the car starts to drift, warning alarms sound to alert the driver.
